Research: Moodboard of clothing for our music video

This is a moodboard of the clothing the artist of our video would wear, clothes of the indie genre, they are very different and out going and that adheres to the concet of Indie, to be different, I want our video star to adhere to this convention as it makes a statement that there is no 'normal' way to be or to dress, just different ways to be or to dress

Music Video Research 3: Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men

Genre: Pop
Style: Concept based

Conventions according to Goodwin:
One highly used convention within the music video is looking into camera. After the initial shots which avoided showing the identity of the person in the establishing medium closeup, Geri becomes the focus of the video, even when there is a group Halliwell is the centre of attention as she looks into the camera, which draws in the audience, creating a closer relationship with them.

Another convention that runs throughout the video is that of voyeuristic shots, which supports Mulvey's theory of the male gaze by presenting a desirable figure. Even from the beginning shots, Geri is wearing tight and revealing clothing, which draws attention towards her toned body and making them engage with the video. This links to Halliwell, due the video being a show of her 'new' body after she was thought of as the unattractive member of the Spice Girls, often because of weight. By releasing a video of her after working on her image, it moves her away from the past music she has been apart of and establishes her as a solo artist.
There are also multiple locations and outfit changes within the video which help to reflect the pop genre, with all outfits consisting of bright colours, as well as items such as leg warmers and sweatbands which relate to the 'Fame' theme of the video.

There are multiple medium closeups of Geri, particularly through the rain scenes, presenting her as confident in her new image, with parts of her body being included in the shot as well as her face. By using the rain to encourage a voyeurisitc image of herself, it helps to appeal to the audience.

Concepts:

One of the main concepts that run throughout the music video is the high level of intertexuality, particularly with links to the film 'Fame'. An example of this is when Geri wears a top stating 'famous' on it, which is similar to the costumes worn in the film.

They also use similar set to the film, with there being a group dance being performed within the street, which is a direct reenactment of a scene from the film. To achieve the filming of this, long shots and wide angle shots are used so that all of the cast can be seen performing the sychronized dance.

Another film that the video has intertexuality with is 'Flashdance'. The beginning of the video is extremely similar to the establishing sequence with Geri being within an audition which even eminates the layout of the judges and their costumes. This may be used due to Halliwell wanting to present a new version of  herself, with her saying 'Can I start again?'. As she is restarting her career as a solo artist, it is likely
that this is linked to her wanting to rid herself of the old views of herself being the 'chubby' Spice Girl, which is what the media portrayed her as.

This has influenced my research and planning as it I have a better idea on social comments within a concept/narrative, I may choose to use this in my music as it is a very effective way to get a point across.

Music Video Research 2: Liam Gallagher - Wall of Glass

Genre: Alternative Rock
Style: Performance and concept based

This influenced my research and planning:

  • The close ups of him singing into camera with a careless attitude as it addresses the audience and presents the artist almost as a narcissist.
  • The special effects and CGI used in this video are very effective and we may be able to produce something similar but to suit a lower budget

Music Video Research 1: Black Eyed Peas - Where is the Love?

Genre: R&B
Style: Performance and concept based

Conventions according to Goodwin:                     Looking into the camera - the fans and audience want close ups of the main artist, this is critical in a promotional music video as it allows fans to develop a personal relationship with the musician, due to the video being performance based it allows viewers who cannot always attend gigs to feel like they're seeing the artist perform their music.

This video also adheres to the conventions of the genre, for example Black represents the colour of evil and the main purpose of this song is questioning the corruption of society and how evil is shadowing the positives of civilisation.
They also use specific hand gestures which are commonly used in R&B music videos to express the passion and power behind their lyrics.

The musicians are also wearing tracksuits which is a key convention of the R&B genre, also the common outfit for a stereotypical Black man is a tracksuit and very casual, informal outfits. There is also a police officer stood next to the black man looking down at him, this suggests there is still segregation in race even though it is not as obvious as it has been in the past.
This also shows the modern representation of a Woman who is surounded by 3 men yet she is wearing the same code of dress, she is on their level and is centre frame, she is also very confident and does not adhere to the conventions of a stereotypical traditional woman

Concepts:

Throughout the video a question mark continues to appear, it appears in a range of different place, it appears on a TV that children are watching, crop fields and sky scrapers as can be seen in this image. This is the main concept of the video and combined with the title of the song "Where is the love?" it is constantly raises the question what people are doing to the world and showing how segregation and racism still looms in society as well as the crime that is a constant occurance in most places on Earth in one form or another.

There is a range of genders, ethnic groups and age groups in this video to show the wide range of people that the corruption and dissaray of society affects and it shows how many people are raising the question "Where is the Love?"
Even though this videos genre of music primarily targeted a young audience (R&B) the concept of the music video intends to capture a much wider audience as it is relatable to so many people and it portrays that no matter what race, age, gender or culture people are scared of the affairs going on in society.

This has influenced my research and planning:
  • I have a better knowledge on social comments related to ethnicity and racism in music videos.
  • I also have a better understanding of identifying concepts in music videos.

Research Group Post: Record Label Name

Rhea, Greta and I have looked into some brand names that would be suitable for us to use, and we thought of a few names, however, all of them seemed to be taken. After some time, the name 'Reckless Records' popped into our heads and we have looked into it hoping that it wasn't taken, and to our joy it was not, as it was only a music shop that sells vinyls that uses that name.
We believe that this name represents us as a team really well, and it will suit the genre of the music/artist that we will pick in the future. Now all that is left to do is to create a logo and our brand seal will be complete.

Change of Groups

During the week my partner for my A2 Media task, Samuel Moverley dropped the subject so I then had to search for another group, I spoke to Greta and Rhea and we exchanged ideas and decided we could work very well together as we all have a similar vision for the music video, I also have a very phychedelic mind and style and I believe this will be very beneficial when making an Indie music video.
